The S Factor By Susan Palmes-Dennis

Liberation and Rosary making!

For the first time in my life I like dogs without fear. Omigod! Why so late? Hear me first!

I am working as a “nanny” to a three year old boy who loves dogs here in US. The dogs are named Bella and Jersey; both canines are playmates of my ward eight hours a day or more when he sleeps late. As his sitter I have no choice except to be nice with these dogs. Bella is five year old Maltepoo while Jersey is nine and a Yorkshire terrier. My hairs “are up” when I am near these dogs because of fear. My fear took place when I was chased by a dog in childhood while selling”camote tops and bananas”. Since then, my guard is ready when “dogs are nearby” despite my heart is pounding and nerves trembling not to mention blood pressure dramatically up. In short, total fear of my life!

My maternal” lola” told me dogs can be ferocious especially if they are trying to protect someone, which I disagree because when I was dashed by the dogs I was carrying a basket with” camote tops and banana “and just passed by the dog, but this comment added to my fear.

But going back to Zayne (he is the boy with the dogs); he is not afraid; he sits with Bella and Jersey and often times kissing with each other, in times like these my plasma soars. Buddies (Zayne and the puppies) take for instance; while sitting on a high chair when being feed his other hand is giving food to either of the dogs below. The bacon, turkey and ham that Zayne do not eat go to Bella and Jersey instead to my mouth (hahahaha). He calls the dogs by names but never forget mine of course. Sometimes he aggravates the dogs at the middle of the day when he and the dogs are tired playing. I don’t have to mention that the boy is copying and imitating some of the traits of the dogs as it is another story; dogs influenced the boy. Proof when Zayne pours water or milk on the carpet or floor he joins Bella and Jersey licking the liquid; am afraid I might join them in the future (Heaven’s forbid)

”Touch Bella” he told me (he could have sense my distance) Whew! I touched the skin then the head of Bella; Bella was at first reluctant to be touched, but persistence paid off, despite the dread until it did not move. It’s like saying, “I did it, I did it” The fear left me. It was a complete liberation. That started my liking the dog.

Better late than never at all it said and coming true to me. Now, the four of us are calm and happy together. But I still have to learn kissing the dogs.

But when I am free with nanny work I make rosaries. I recently joined the Ministry of making rosaries at St. Mark Catholic Church here at Huntersville, NC and I tell you it is very fulfilling and rewarding. This is the first time I made rosaries (the ever loyal companion of my life) at first I thought I could not do the knots as it requires finger practice.

The Ministry has 45 members says Susan Claire Wild, the coordinator. Some can’t attend the meetings but make rosaries at home and left finished products at the basket in the church. A total of 8,000 rosaries have been made by the group in three year time. These rosaries are distributed to Africa, Japan, Peru and Ecuador. Next week, the group will be sending rosaries to Archbishop Antonio Ledesma here at Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. Distribution is also given free to charitable institutions, nursing homes, hospice, parish teen retreats and adoration chapel.

Susan Wild was a newcomer at St. Mark three years ago asked herself what she can do to help the church; she found the answer in making the rosaries. She does it with the help of her twin fraternal sons both with autism. She said ”made me so close to my sons”. Indeed life works in mysterious ways for a remarkable woman and a mother.
