Media Helps

Romans 8:28 says: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

No one would ever wish for a lethal flash flood.

It is not good that there was a flood.

But good can come because of the flood.

Perhaps the “easiest” way to bring good from something bad is not to repeat the mistakes that brought us there.

This may not be the time to play the blame game. Right now we need to concentrate on helping people. But, the community has been careful not to help people when they’re helping themselves the wrong way.

Few of us would give money to a drug addict, or, worse, get them more drugs. We know we are hurting them. In the same way no agencies are giving money, loans or donations in kind to those who insist on living in the most dangerous of areas.

We have all experienced the extenuating effects of the flood. No electricity for days. No running water for weeks. Minimal cash flow as we give what we can (and more) to those in need.

Not only lives and homes, but, businesses were lost, or damaged, or affected by the flood. Some corporations lost millions upon millions.

Here’s an interesting thought: What about those who did not lose, but, should!?! Perhaps there are illegal loggers or miners that lost no equipment or stock. Maybe they merely lost a few days of profit.

We have all seen great strides in our city, only to see it revert to despicable lows. Cogon is a perfect example. Three years ago vendors were inside. The Divisoria area is another example. Three years ago it was easy to walk down the sidewalk. Now we have to walk in the open street dodging illegal motorellas and tricycles.

The New Testament says: “…the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.” (2 Peter 2:22) It is quoting the Old Testament book of Proverbs: “As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.” (26:11)

Like when a child asks his/her parents why their bed has to be made each day: it will just be messed up again that night. Why wash the dishes? They’ll just get dirty again.

Similar to the taxi driver asked why he was parked illegally, blocking many and causing a traffic jam: “The police haven’t asked me to move.” Why should the “illegal” logging and mining projects be stopped if they are continually given “permits?”

It is the chicken and the egg. Why are moral people asking for immoral permits? Because they can make money. Why are government officials giving out illegal/immoral permits. Because they can make money. Who’s wrong? Both!!!

Media has been helping bring these issues to light. Let’s applaud and encourage them! This is how good can come from evil, learning from our mistakes, and, not repeating them.
