Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) , is the world’s largest shipping company. Its roots have been going back more than a century, with the merging of two leading Japanese Companies – Mitsui Steamship Co. Ltd. and Osaka Shosen Kaisha (O.S.K.) Lines in 1964.
These companies, being the pioneers in Japanese shipping, were innovative from the start with Japan’s first steel-hulled freighter, first fully automated cargo ship, the list goes on and on. After the merger, MOL continued this tradition in such fields as container shipping, transport of liquefied gasses, and total logistics – multimodal shipping encompassing sea, air and land transportation.
Today, MOL is a leader in the transportation of containerized and bulk cargoes of all kinds. Its modern fleet totals about 850 vessels with an aggregate of 25 million deadweight tons. These ships ply 40 routes that circle the globe, linking some 300 ports in over 100 nations.
While strengthening their firm base in maritime shipping MOL has, in recent years, diversified into related fields including warehousing, distribution, freight forwarding, ship brokering, ship agency, insurance and port harbor transportation. MOL continues to explore new frontiers in the shipping industry maintaining its pioneering and innovative tradition thereby ensuring safety, protection of the marine environment and efficiency in the carriage of goods by sea.
