Media Message By: John DeCleene

Media and Sendong

Most media has been very fair in their reporting of Sendong.

Better yet, many have done their part to reach out. Smaller stations are funneling donations they receive to larger organizations. Larger organizations with manpower are collecting and distributing in fair and practical ways.

Thankfully most media has not fallen prey to the “blame game.” It is sad that some politicians have spent more time in front of the media saying why they are not to blame rather than explaining what work is actually being done. But, media is focusing on what is being done. Cagayanons can be proud of that!

There were so many stories reported about strangers helping strangers, neighbors helping neighbors and entire families reaching out to other families. Unfortunately there have also been some looting and other violent events. Thankfully, the good deeds far outweigh the bad. Only the most base of human beings would take advantage of such a situation.

Media has been busy giving information. An interesting bit of information capably being disseminated is that Sendong was not a typhoon. It was a storm that caused a flood. (www.observatory.ph/.../2011Dec27Tue10240 )

Another aspect of media being positive has been coverage of the relief centers. While they stop by, report, take pictures and video’s, but they are not exploiting the victims. They have been reporting on the conditions, but, not creating tears or drama.

The national government has obviously used its experience from other storms for the benefit of Cagayanons. Housing is not only provided for temporary relief, but, those receiving permanent housing are also given the opportunity to work for it. It was explained that this helps victims regain that which was so precious – the ability to have control over their lives.

Media has been a blessing in many ways during the storm. We can assume it will continue to be a source for information and help as the weeks progress. No doubt life is bound to become more difficult for victims.

Leptospirosis has arrived as predicted. Thankfully, again because of the experience of previous storms in other locations, again, this has been attacked right away. The deaths are so sad. It is comforting that our hospitals are doing all they can. They are accepting all they can, and, treating those they cannot take in.

Media has also helped keep the public informed about how victims are being helped to transition from evacuation centers to some of the tent cities. More tents are being donated from Rotarians from Australia, more good news.

God’s Word is also full of good and encouraging news, or, messages: Hebrews 13:5 promises that God will never leave us or forsake us. Jeremiah 31:25 promises that God will refresh everyone who languishes.

And, when we feel lost and confused, God promises that He has a plan for us, and, that His plan is for our good in Jeremiah 29:11. James 1:5 promises that God will give us wisdom when we ask Him for it.

There is much to do, and, it can be done for God’s glory when it’s done with His direction.
