Jaraula suspends all mining operations in CdeO
City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula today ordered the suspension of all mining operations within the territorial jurisdiction of Cagayan de Oro City.
The Mayor issued Executive Order No. 2009CGJ-002 after Cagayan de Oro City suffered tremendous devastation when two flashfloods badly hit several coastal and riverside barangays of the city on January 3, 2009 and January 11, 2009, respectively.
“It has become imperative in the pursuit of general welfare to declare all mining operations, with or without permits within the territorial jurisdiction of Cagayan de Oro City, immediately suspended,” the Mayor stressed.
In his order, Jaraula cited that the occurrence of the rampaging floods brought about by typhoon “Auring” last week and yesterday’s floods and landslides were aggravated by the abusive and irregular mining operations, causing calamitous conditions in the city.
“Flood is a manifestation of abuse and lack of discipline, non-compliance with the terms and conditions specified in the permits and licenses,” the City Chief Executive pointed out.
“The floods caused by the abusive and irregular mining operations resulted to the destruction of agricultural areas, farm-to-market road networks, claimed and endanger several lives, and extensive damage to properties,” he added.
Ordered to enforce and monitor the mayor’s suspension order on all mining operations in the city are the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO), Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) and all barangay officials.
The order will also be furnished to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), 4th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) and all other concerned agencies for their appropriate action, assistance and coordination. (CIO)
